Evolving Cold Chain Requirements for Durian Transport Containers in Cross Border Trade

Fresh produce is sensitive to changes in temperature and humidity, and fluctuations during international transport can reduce its commercial quality. Durian has a higher respiration rate than many other fruits and vegetables, continues to ripen after harvest and releases a strong odor. These characteristics call for more closely controlled sea transport conditions than those required for many other fruits. Durian transport containers must maintain a stable internal environment throughout the voyage to keep the fruit within an acceptable quality range.

Temperature control is the starting point for performance specifications. Temperature and humidity requirements for ocean shipments of fresh produce must be set according to the commodity. Variations between monitoring points inside the container should remain limited, and the refrigeration unit must sustain cooling under high ambient temperatures. Loading a durian transport container requires clear airflow passages so that cold air can circulate evenly from the floor through the load and toward the ceiling. Proper stowage helps prevent local hot spots, while door-opening time during loading and unloading also needs to be controlled.

Balancing airtightness and ventilation is equally important. Durian releases ethylene and other gases during transport. Excessive gas accumulation can accelerate ripening, while excessive ventilation can increase moisture loss and reduce fruit weight. Adjustable fresh-air ventilation regulates air exchange to remove unwanted gases while helping maintain suitable humidity. This balance directly influences the proportion of fruit that remains marketable on arrival.

Structural integrity and cleanability must also be considered. The underframe and corner castings need to withstand repeated lifting and stacking loads on ocean routes. Because durian odors can persist, interior wall panels and flooring should be easy to clean to minimize odor transfer between shipments. Materials should support effective sealing and corrosion resistance, while door-gasket resilience contributes to long-term airtightness.

As cold-chain standards for ocean transport of fresh produce develop, equipment specifications and operating procedures are becoming more detailed. Carriers and cargo owners should assess temperature and humidity control, ventilation and structural strength against commodity requirements, taking route climate, shipment volume and turnaround schedules into account. Aligning durian transport container performance with applicable industry standards helps control losses in cross-border fresh-produce trade.
