Fruit and vegetable export involves long industrial chains and numerous handling links. Any malfunction in the cold chain may lead to the write-off of the entire consignment. The selection of reefer containers directly determines temperature control stability and the actual cargo damage rate. In practice, many export enterprises encounter problems in this regard. Some containers suffer severe temperature fluctuations, some fail to match required humidity parameters, and others have ineffective modified atmosphere functions. When choosing reefer containers, rental cost should not be the sole consideration. Instead, the compatibility of technical parameters is the core priority. A thorough assessment can be conducted from the following perspectives.

Temperature control parameters are the fundamental criteria for selecting containers for fruit and vegetable cold chain transport. Different fruits and vegetables vary greatly in temperature sensitivity during storage and transit. Leafy vegetables thrive at 0–2°C, while berries require an even lower temperature range of -1°C to 1°C. Tropical fruits such as mangoes and bananas can only withstand temperatures between 12°C and 14°C. Temperatures below 10°C will cause chilling injury, resulting in blackened peel and browned flesh. Standard reefer containers generally feature a temperature control range from -25°C to +25°C, yet fruit and vegetable exports usually only require a narrow band within this scope. It is essential to verify the actual temperature control accuracy of containers prior to booking. A temperature deviation exceeding ±1°C will cause visible quality deterioration of fruits and vegetables after ocean transportation lasting more than ten days.

Humidity control is a frequently overlooked parameter, yet it exerts an equally important impact on fruit and vegetable preservation as temperature. Most fruits and vegetables maintain optimal commercial condition at a relative humidity of 90% to 95%. Low humidity accelerates moisture evaporation, causing leaf wilting and peel shriveling. Excessively high humidity, by contrast, fosters mold growth and doubles the decay rate. Reefer containers on the market adopt two different humidity management solutions. Some are fitted with independent humidification systems for active humidity regulation, while others have no humidifying devices and rely entirely on the natural transpiration of cargo to balance humidity. For high-value exported fruits and vegetables, containers with active humidity regulation serve as a more reliable option.

Modified atmosphere function and refrigeration mode are two other key factors to take into account. MA (Modified Atmosphere) reefer containers reduce oxygen concentration and raise carbon dioxide levels inside the unit, which slows down the respiration and ethylene emission of fruits and vegetables and thus extends their shelf life. This technology is particularly vital for long-distance ocean shipping, as longer voyages mean greater metabolic loss for produce. In terms of refrigeration units, self-powered models come with built-in compressors and operate independently of onboard power supply, making them ideal for routes with underdeveloped port infrastructure. Ship-dependent refrigeration units require power supplied by vessels and entail lower operating costs, but they are subject to route restrictions. Enterprises shall select containers in line with export destinations and cargo characteristics to keep the cargo damage rate within an acceptable range.

Ultimately, selecting reefer containers is essentially a matter of risk management. Issues with temperature, humidity, modified atmosphere and refrigeration modes correspond to distinct cargo damage scenarios. Rather than spending resources on claim settlement after problems occur, it is advisable to finalize all technical parameters at the booking stage. Following the above criteria during container selection will help enterprises avoid unnecessary setbacks in the cold chain for fruit and vegetable exports.
