Food exports set stringent requirements for transportation. Goods must be kept under stable low temperature conditions in cross border circulation, and reefer containers are the critical equipment tasked with this function. If enterprises ignore compliance details when selecting containers, they may encounter risks such as cargo damage, cargo return and customs clearance hold ups. Hence, adopting a scientific selection method is fundamental to securing smooth food exports.

First, reefer containers must be equipped with full compliance certifications. Pursuant to the Hygiene Specifications for Import and Export Refrigerated and Frozen Food Containers and relevant industrial standards, containers shall satisfy requirements under the Convention for Safe Containers (CSC), hold valid inspection certificates and remain within the inspection validity period. Packaging and transportation modes for exported food shall meet safety and hygiene criteria. Carriers for perishable food shall apply to inspection and quarantine authorities for pre loading fitness for carriage inspection covering cleanliness, sanitation, refrigeration performance and sealing performance. Reefer containers that are uninspected or fail inspection must not be used for food loading.

Second, temperature control accuracy is the core performance metric for reefer containers. Food cold chain logistics requires transport equipment to be fitted with temperature recorders that faithfully capture in container air temperature, alongside positioning functions to log location data in real time. For frozen cargo, the gap between set temperature and actual in container temperature shall be controlled within 3℃; for chilled cargo, temperature error should not exceed 0.5℃. Moreover, the refrigerated unit of a reefer container shall run heating, cooling and defrosting fully automatically. Its temperature adjustment scope shall cover the storage conditions required by goods and maintain steady operation.

Third, container hygiene and structural integrity directly determine food safety. Under relevant specifications, reefer containers shall be clean, sanitary, dry and odour free. No defects or anomalies that may trigger cargo loss shall be found inside the unit, and thermal insulation facilities and refrigeration capacity shall be kept in good working order. Before loading, inspect container door sealing, vent conditions and floor drainage functions to avoid cold air passages being blocked by cargo. For respiring goods such as fresh fruits and vegetables, ventilation shall be adjusted promptly. For frozen goods, fresh air inlets need to be closed to prevent temperature swings.

Furthermore, when selecting reefer containers, enterprises shall verify whether suppliers can provide SOC certificates and supporting compliance documents, and confirm details including refrigerated unit brands and container age. Materials for temperature controlled transport equipment shall feature low water absorption, low air permeability and sound corrosion resistance so as to preserve thermal insulation performance over long distance ocean voyages. By enforcing strict checks on all above mentioned items, food exporting enterprises can substantially lower quality risks in cross border transport, guarantee smooth customs clearance and meet regulatory requirements of destination markets.
