Within cold chain logistics systems, reefer containers undertake the core mission of ensuring safe circulation of temperature controlled cargo. As cross border trade continuously raises the bar for preservation precision, the two mainstream solutions, mechanical type and controlled atmosphere (CA) types, exhibit increasingly clear differentiation in functional positioning. Understanding their discrepancies enables purchasers to make well matched selections according to actual cargo characteristics.

Mechanical type reefer containers achieve in container temperature regulation through compression based refrigerated units. With mature technical pathways, they apply to temperature sensitive cargo without special atmospheric requirements, such as frozen meat, dairy products and general pharmaceutical products. This solution features rapid temperature response, sound equipment maintenance systems and wide coverage of supporting services at global ports, making it suitable for conventional cold chain transport demands with high standardization.

Controlled atmosphere (CA) reefer containers integrate a gas composition regulation module on the basis of temperature control. By adjusting concentrations of oxygen, carbon dioxide and nitrogen, they slow down fruit and vegetable respiration and microbial activity. This functional distinction makes them irreplaceable for flowers and high value fresh produce. For example, for climacteric fruits and vegetables such as blueberries and avocados, low temperature alone cannot arrest post ripening during long distance ocean shipping. CA intervention can extend the preservation cycle by several weeks and markedly lower the cargo damage rate.

From a structural standpoint, the two types of reefer containers have fundamental gaps in container tightness requirements. The mechanical type prioritizes insulation layer thickness and refrigerated unit energy efficiency, whereas CA type units set higher standards for door sealing workmanship, gas circulation pipelines and sensor accuracy. CA reefer containers are generally equipped with multi channel gas analysis units and automatic gas replenishment devices, to guarantee in container gas compositions remain within preset thresholds for transoceanic voyages exceeding 30 days.

In respect of operation and maintenance costs, CA reefer containers call for higher upfront investment and follow up maintenance expenses compared with mechanical type units. Even so, the cargo value benefits they bring can cover such incremental expenditure for specific commodity categories. The mechanical type delivers better cost efficiency for routine cold chain operations featuring short transit cycles and single cargo types. For complex scenarios involving high value goods, long transit durations and mixed loading for multiple temperature zones, CA technology yields more substantial overall benefits.

Functional differences between mechanical type and CA reefer containers determine their respective roles in cold chain transport. Purchasers shall carry out comprehensive evaluation covering cargo biological traits, transit cycle length and preservation standards of target markets. In this way, they can select container configurations matching their own supply chain requirements and strike a reasonable balance between temperature control performance and operating costs.

CIMC Qingdao Refrigeration Industrial Base was established in 1999. It is dedicated to designing and manufacturing ISO-standard reefer containers and producing customized refrigeration and insulation specialty products. Its customers span major global logistics systems, including North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. The base's products cover application scenarios across the "sea, land, and air" supply chain systems, providing full-process equipment manufacturing solutions for cold chain equipment — from pre-cooling at production origins and manufacturing to midstream logistics transportation and last-mile warehousing.
